Happy Belated Birthday, Dream Smashers

Dream Smashers celebrated her first birthday all alone in March. I'm a horrible book parent and didn't even throw her a party. To make up for it, I gave her a facelift. I hope she likes it. And I hope her readers like it, too.

Take a look. Isn't she pretty?

Dream Smashers has needed a new cover for a while now. It's an important story, but often gets overlooked. The original cover, which I love, wasn't sitting well with the readers. It even was nominated for a most ugly cover list over on Goodreads. The second cover was an experiment, something I whipped up myself, and not very professional.  I believe this new cover captures the emotion of the story, but also has appeal for the readers. I adore it!

About Dream Smashers:

Letting go is hard to do, but sometimes, it's all you can do.

Sixteen-year-old Autumn is a human heartache. Everywhere she turns people are stomping on her hopes and dreams. Her mom's a tweaker. She's lived with her chain-smoking grandmother for as long as she can remember. Even her best friend has issues. Autumn seems to be the only responsible person she knows and she's sick of putting up with it all.

When she meets Evan, a hot guy without a worry in the world, she can only wonder if he's for real or just another Dream Smasher.

A girl who no longer wants to care and a boy who cares enough for the both of them. Dream Smashers is a love story, but most of all, it's about letting go.

Thanks to my good friend, Megg Jensen, for inspiring me to get 'er done, and Rashelle Workman who referred Megg who then referred me to the cover artisan Steven Novak. Go check him out. He's awesome.

Dream Smashers is available on Amazon Kindle and wherever else eBooks are sold.  It may take a day or two for the new version to be available.

So tell me, do you like it?

and the winner is...

Thank you for participating in the Indelibles On Fire Blog Hop Giveaway. We are so excited at the number of people who entered. If you missed the announcement on who won the Kindle Fire, you can check it out on the Indelibles blog. Congratulations!

I was so happy at the number of people who showed interest in my novels. The emails to the winners have been sent. So, if you haven't received an email, you should notify me. Why, you say? Because everyone who entered my giveaway will be awarded the book of their choice. Yay!

As I mentioned in the email, I'm the type of person who enters contests all the time. Yet, I never win. I'd at least like a gold star, or something, from my efforts, but the win cool stuff fairy never passes my way. Therefore, I'd like to award everyone who took the time and effort to post on my blog during the giveaway something special as a thank you. Your interest in my stories means a lot to me.

If you posted on the blog, but didn't get an email, please do let me know. There were a couple emails that didn't go through.

Thank you, again, and enjoy!

Monday, August 1, 2011

I should feel busy,

but I don't. There have been some happenings in the works. Yep, happenings. Things that are going to happen.

First happening: I've been asked to participate in an event this weekend called "Art in the Heart." I'll set up my little table to display a stack of books and then sit my bottom in a chair. If you are in the Vancouver area, please come see me! I'll be sitting with some other awesome authors in front of the Angst Gallery.

Second happening: Loramendi's Story will be available for purchase this coming weekend. August 7th to be exact. It has received some lovely reviews thus far.

Third happening: Dream Smashers will be on a blog tour the week of August 8th! The Teen Book Scene has put together this awesome tour. I'll announce the stops this coming weekend.

Fourth happening: I received a letter in the mail last weekend informing me that I've been accepted into nursing school. Woo hoo! I begin this fall.

Fifth happening: Wordstock is just around the corner. I'm sure you read my whine in the previous blog about not being able to participate. That has changed! Although I won't be speaking, I'll be there with a few other fantastic local authors, ready to sign books. More information to come. (I'm really, super elated and hope I get to meet Maggie Stiefvater and Ellen Hopkins.)

Sixth happening: After Wordstock, I'm going on a regional tour with a group of authors including Stacey Wallace Benefiel and Lisa Nowak. I'll share the complete list of authors and dates closer to October.

A lot of happenings right there. How does all this make me feel? Happy, elated, stoked, nervous, scared...

I hope you'll stay with me for the ride! It should be pretty wild. :)

Dreaming of Wordstock

The Wordstock Festival here in Portland has been around for about five years. Every year of its existence, I've wandered the aisles of beautiful books and writing services being promoted and celebrated by local authors, publishers, editors, and the like. Then I'd sit in on a reading or two and get uber-excited to meet the authors.

While listening to the readers, I'd also fantasize that someday I'd be up there reading my pages. Lets put a little emphasis on the word FANTASY here because if I were to ever get up on a stage to read my pages, mouth farts, drool, and hiccups would probably be the only thing exiting my lips. Stage fright anyone? In Autumn's words from my novel, Dream Smashers, "One can still have hope." And in my words, "One can still dream."

This is my first year to have a published novel. I thought for sure they would definitely let me read at the festival this year, because, well, I have a published novel, darn it. Plus, I'm from the same area the festival is held, total shoe-in. Plus, plus, I whispered nice things to the book, like, "Please impress the peeps responsible for inviting authors to the festival," and "Don't fail me now," before sliding it into the bubbly envelope and addressing it to the Wordstock powers.

I waited patiently everyday for the mail-person to deliver my invitation to the ball. Did I ever receive one? Sadly, uh, it probably got lost somewhere and should arrive any day now.

Disappointed by the loss of my invitation, I scrolled through the very impressive list of YA and Middle Grade authors whose invitation didn't fall through the door panel of the mail truck. OMG! No wonder mine got lost.

Take a look for yourself: The List of YA and Middle Grade Authors attending Wordstock 2011

How is a local author supposed to compete with that? Sigh. Well, there's always next year, right?

Oh, and did you see on that list one of my favorite authors? Maggie Stiefvater! How cool is that? Very.

Chin up, peeps, we'll get there someday. Peace out for now.

Who is Evan Laverne?

Evan Laverne isn't the average guy seen in most YA Romance novels these days. He's not the dark and mysterious teen heart throb that every girl salivates over. He doesn't skip class or belong to a rock band or have a super-fast car. He's not a loner or a drinker or a jock. No, Evan doesn't belong to a gang, he doesn't sparkle, nor does he smell like a cute fuzzy wolf.

Evan has a kind heart. He loves to help people. He genuinely cares about the homeless and the less fortunate. Evan is thoughtful, he believes in God, but doesn't push his beliefs on others, he's homeschooled, and volunteers at the local shelter. He's shy around girls and hasn't really kissed one. Until he meets Autumn. And a first kiss can't get any memorable than theirs.

Most importantly, Evan is real. He's that guy. The good guy who girls wish they chose instead of the loser who was fun for just a minute.

He's the opposite of everyone else in Autumn's life and that's exactly what she needs. How much cooler can a guy get? Not much.

Find out more about Evan and Autumn in Dream Smashers -- available in eBook and paperback. Follow the links in the sidebar.

Sample Sunday -- Dream Smashers

Autumn meets Rainy from Chapter 12
Dream Smashers by Angela Carlie -- all rights reserved
Available as an eBook for only $2.99 and paperback for only $11

Our meeting was just one of those things that happened. On the first day of kindergarten Gramps stood next to me at the corner, waiting for the bus. He held my lunch box and backpack for me until the bus squeaked and then psshed to a stop. It seemed like a giant banana until the doors opened, and then it seemed like a jungle. All kinds of noise escaped from those opened doors, none of it sounding the least bit safe. Screeches, giddy laughter, yelling, crying, sneezing, coughing, all struck me as terrifying and crazy.
Gramps nudged me toward the gaping mouth of the bus. I tried to stay brave while he threaded my arms through the backpack straps and handed me my lunch box. “Chin up, kiddo. You’re going to meet some of the best friends of your life on this bus.” He winked at me, giving me superhero strength.
I climbed up the stairs, turning at the top to wave at him before the doors slammed shut. I found a seat next to a window and held the fire behind my eyes and down my throat from escaping. The bus moved forward.
Two houses down, a girl my age with a sprinkler of hair plopped on top of her head, scurried from a house. Her arms flapped like wings, signaling the bus to stop.
Air somehow forced itself over my vocal chords and out my mouth. “Stop!”
The driver jerked the bus to a stop and opened the doors.
The girl, out of breath, slapped her body down next to me. “That was close!” She opened her lunch box, the very same lunch box that I held on my lap—a pink plastic Barbie box. Her box didn’t hold items of nourishment though. Instead it held glittery lip balms of every flavor imaginable. Grams never had the extra money to buy me lip balms when I asked each week at the grocery store. And the girl had an entire lunch box full. We’ve been friends forever since that day.

Dream Smashers eBook Wrapper

As mentioned in a previous post, we are repackaging the eBook edition of Dream Smashers. The paperback edition will not be changing.

Sixteen-year-old Autumn is a human heartache. Everywhere she turns people are stomping on her hopes and dreams. Her mom’s a tweaker. She’s lived with her chain-smoking grandmother for as long as she can remember. Even her best friend has issues. Autumn seems to be the only responsible person she knows and she’s sick of putting up with it all.

When she meets Evan, a hot guy without a worry in the world, she can only wonder if he’s for real or just another Dream Smasher.

A girl who no longer wants to care and a boy who cares enough for the both of them. Dream Smashers is a love story, but most of all, it’s about letting go.

It's not my original vision for the cover, obviously, but I'm falling in love with this cover more every time I look at it. On top of that cool tidbit, what makes it even better is I made it myself with the ever helpful critiques from my fellow DarkSide Publishing authors. So there's a little pride for ya.

This cover should be live on all the storefronts by midweek.

What do you think? Do you like it?

Upcoming Stuff

If you've been a follower of this blog for some time, you'll remember the series Someday Famous YA Authors from last year. I'm happy to announce the series will resume this month. Prepare to meet some fabulous authors!

I'm receiving the last of the proof reader notes for Land of Corn Chips this weekend and will have the advance reader copies ready to send out to awesome bloggers very soon. Some are already scheduled to receive an ARC. If you are a book blogger/reviewer and would like to review Land of Corn Chips, let me know and I'll add you to the list to receive a pdf. Land of Corn Chips is a novel written for ages 8-12 and up.

Dream Smashers will be getting a facelift. That's right. It's not even two months old and already needs some cosmetic surgery. Don't worry though, the important guts will remain the same. We're shining up the packaging to make it pretty enough for all those eBook buyers. Yes, it's true, books are judged by their cover and we are a society that likes shiny things--even shiny books.

Last weekend we watch THOR at the theater. Oh my. I'd love to see it again and can't wait for it to come out on DVD. For reals. This weekend we will probably go see PRIEST. Have you watched it? I hope it's wicked cool. I'll let you know. I also can't wait for PIRATES next weekend. Ah, so many movies! But for now, I leave you with this magnificent bit. When you get to :19 seconds, pause it. You have to be quick though!

Did you pause it?

Peace out for now.

Two F's, a M, and a L

Two pieces of news today.

News Piece One:

Dream Smashers was awarded the FLAMINGNET TOP CHOICE AWARD. This is the first award Dream Smashers has earned. I'm so excited and happy and honored. Thank you Flamingnet!

Piece Two:

Tomorrow morning at 8 am (pacific time) I'll be interviewed by Joann Hamman-Buchanan on her radio show The Eclectic Artist Cave. This is kind of a big deal for me because I'm not much of a talker. I'm a quiet person with not many spontaneous words (my words must simmer), so this should be interesting. Or not! ;) No, really, we'll be talking Dream Smashers and DarkSide Publishing, how could it not be interesting? I hope you stop by Fate Radio to listen live!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND!

I finally sent Land of Corn Chips to the proofreaders today. I'm wondering if I should rest my brain for a bit by reading a yummy book or jump into the next project that has been haunting me.  I'll probably do a little of both.

Fate Radio
Mother's Day
Land of Corn Chips

Peace out for now!

Fluffiness of Debut Month

Although Dream Smashers became available to the world at the end of March, I didn't start promoting it until April 4th. That was the "official" launch date. When publishing to stores fronts such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble, the author can't choose the publish day. The novel could show up that same day or the following or in some cases a few days later. I was totally paranoid it wouldn't be available on the right day and submitted it way early.

I discovered that networking and marketing is a huge time suckage. So much that I Facebooked, Tweeted, sought reviews and hit the refresh button on my Amazon sales page probably a million times an hour for the last month. This took away from my gym time and any little time I had prior to April 4th for writing, editing and critiquing. Consequently, I also turned a little fluffier than I was. Well, that's expected when one doesn't have time to cook or go to the gym.

May will be spent trimming some fluff on my bod as well as my next novel, Land of Corn Chips. Remind me to please not schedule book launches so close together next time, would you? Thanks!

Peace out for now.

Book Inscriptions

My fellow DarkSide authors recently participated in their first book signing. This got me thinking. I've only signed a handful of my books thus far. Mainly for book giveaway winners. In those books, I inscribed a variation of the same message based on the theme of the book. I don't like the inscriptions I came up with.

The first few books have something like this: "Don't give up on hope" or "Don't lose hope." After some contemplation, I found these negative so I switched it for a more positive message: "Hold on to hope."

I'm still not sure if I like the latter message either. One, it's mushy. It makes me feel like a preacher or someone who has a positive outlook on everything. Well, I'm definitely not a preacher and I have a super negative attitude much of the time. I try to stay positive, but things usually start out negative before my effort kicks in. Two, it's kind of silly because of course everyone holds onto hope. It's natural for all living creatures to have some sort of hope. Yes, I know I said "all living creatures." That's a debate for another blog post. My point is, the advice or "message" shouldn't be so generalized.

"Hold on to hope" is like writing "Eat food." It's not saying "Eat your vegetables" or "Don't forget desert," which is what I think an inscription should say.

Wait a  minute... How perfect is that? Man, I knew you all would help me with this issue. I'm totally going with "Eat your vegetables" from now on. Autumn hates vegetables. Perfect.

Thanks, friends!

Peace out.

It's Officiallly Official

Marketing. Not my forte.

I knew this going into the do-it-yourself world of publishing, but thought that maybe this time the sky would open up and beam down a magnificent light upon my epic-like novel, Dream Smashers. Maybe it will. Someday.

Zero sales in four days equals frowny face on Angela's head. Is that normal? What should I do? I can't keep saying, "Hey, lookie here. A rad novel for only $2.99." People get tired of hearing it.

I've had a few reviewers review it and it garnered some lovely reviews of four and five stars. (I just said review three times in the same sentence) Well, mostly four stars, but I'm taking into consideration that I didn't know a single one of those reviewers. Not one. I simply asked them to review it. I didn't smoosh them and say super-nice things about them. I didn't rub their shoulders or become BFF's with them, so I think the four star reviews shine brighter for me. I'm very thankful for them.

I need to write. So that's what I'm going to be concentrating on from now on. The marketing thing, or whatever people call it, will happen, too. I'm just not going to spend every minute of the day trying to do it. With time, word will get around that Angela is legit down to her spit and won't fluff your feathers for a sale. She's already worked her booty off creating a novel to entertain you. So buy it and enjoy it and give it an honest review. She'll be thankful and that's it. Maybe someday she can hire someone to do all the bullshitting for her. That would be rad!

Peace out for now.

PS -- Land of Corn Chips, a middle grade novel, will be out on June 6th. The cover art is done and it is SUPER AWESOME. I can't wait to share it with the world on April 29th. Don't ask me why you have to wait until April 29th. It's just a day that I threw out. Which is weird because I'm usually an impulsive person who plans absolutely nothing. But this, this is planned and it shall remain that way. I think. Oh, did I mention how AMAZING the cover is for Land of Corn Chips? Am I a walking contradiction or what? Okay, back to the writing.

DREAM SMASHERS LAUNCH CELEBRATION!

It's April 4th, people! I'm not sure where all the time went, but it's gone. DREAM SMASHERS is now available for purchase at Amazon, Amazon UKBarnes and Noble, and Smashwords.

In celebration, I was going to create a vlog. Well, I did create one, but I discovered that I'm an uber-goober who says "um" every two seconds and forgets what to say every five seconds. So, instead, I'll write everything out, which will be a lot faster for you to get through.

I need your help to get Dream Smashers out to the world. Indie authors usually don't have the money for expensive advertising and book tours and book signings that big publishing houses have for their authors. Our books rely heavily, if not all, on word-of-mouth advertising. If you read an indie book you like, don't keep it a secret. Please. Let the world know.

Whether you've read Dream Smashers and loved it, or you just like me, or maybe you like the whole idea of the indie author movement, whatever your reason, please help spread the word.

Dream Smashers is very important to me. I hope that it finds a special place in your heart, too. You can buy it as an e-Book for less than your Starbucks bill for the morning. You get an entire novel worth of yummy words for less than a cup of coffee. How cool is that?

In celebration of introducing Dream Smashers to the world, I'd like to offer some gifts to show my appreciation of your help. Now, the gifts aren't like a million-dollars-cool or anything, but rather some awesome reads by DarkSide Publishing authors and small tokens that everyone will most likely enjoy. You don't have to promote Dream Smashers to win a gift, though (see below).

There are three gift packages outlined. In order to receive one of them, you must enter the drawing. Each time you promote Dream Smashers, paste the link to the promotion in the comment section below. Each link gives you one entry into the drawing to win a gift. *Please only three entries per day per person.*

Ways to promote for the drawing:

Post the Dream Smashers trailer to one or all of your social networking sites. (each site is an individual entry)

Post a link to this blog on one or all of your social networking sites. (each site is an individual entry)

Tweet on Twitter about Dream Smashers with a link to this blog using one or both of these hashtags: #BookLaunch or #BookGiveaway. Please remember to tag me in the tweet so I can see it. @angelacarlie

Post the cover image of Dream Smashers on one or more of your social networking sites. (each site is an individual entry) If you decide to use the cover image as your profile image, each day it is set as your profile image is a BONUS entry and won't count against your three entries for the day. Post the link below with the number of days it will be up as your profile image.

If you choose NOT to participate in the Dream Smashers promotion but still want to participate in the drawing, it's all good. Please do one or more of the following things:

In the comment section below, tell me what your favorite book is and why. (For two entries)

Post on one or more of your social networking sites something positive. Anything positive that will uplift others. Please post the links in the comment section.

*Please be sure I have your contact information. If it is not clear who you are in the links, you must email me your contact information. If your links go to a Facebook page with the security set so that I can't see it, you should probably friend me so that I can see your entry. If I can't see the entry, it won't count.*

A Beautiful Package

I haven't been sick in a long time. But yesterday, while in cycle class, a woman next to me decided to continuously hack her lungs out--all over me. No doubt, she's the culprit for my swollen glands today. I predict, however, my warrior type immune system shall conquer all evil ick germs by tomorrow. My point is, I was a bit down today.

There came a cure by way of UPS dude. He rang the bell and, fortunately, ran away to his brown escape mobile before I opened the door. I stayed hidden until he zoomed down the road because my fuzzy snowflake pajamas and pink princess slippers most likely would have embarrassed him. When the coast was clear, I snatched the beautiful package from the step.

I didn't think it would be such a big deal. Maybe it was all the stress of things built up. Indie authors are the hardest working authors. Seriously. I've found this to be a fact. Maybe it was the ick pulsating through my veins. Maybe it was the eighteen months of sweat and tears and hope and fear and frustration and rejection, rejection, rejection involved in writing this novel. Whatever the reason, holding my real-live novel for the first time... Wow.

Now the hard part begins. Next Monday I'll ask for your help with getting Autumn's story known to the world. Until then, peace out, friends.

A Chapter A Day and Goodreads

I've been a prude when it comes to my writing. Nobody outside of my critique group, editor, family, a few beta readers and a couple of friends have ever read my novels. There are two reasons for this. The first, most of my work never seems to be finished enough to share with strangers. The second is because I've always felt that giving away stories for free makes me feel like I don't hold any worth toward them. When in reality, my stories mean a lot to me.

It's a good feeling to finally get Dream Smashers out into the world. It's a story, I believe, that many teens may benefit from. So in the spirit of sharing and to give the reader a taste of my writing since this is my debut novel, I'll be giving a chapter away until the end of March. Then on April 4th, Dream Smashers will be available for purchase via eBook and paperback.

I've also been playing around with Goodreads. If you are on Goodreads, please visit me and be my friend. Because I heard that it's cool to be on Goodreads and to have friends.

Thanks!

Have a good night. Peace out for now.
