Death Touch is Now Available!

You've been patient and now the wait is over! The fourth book in the Lords of Shifters series is now available.

Aubrey is a witch with no magic. She helplessly watches as the town hangs her mother to death and wishes she could save her with a spell. But before her mother dies, she curses Aubrey to live as a human and warns her to stay away from dragons.

With nothing to live for and no love in her life, Aubrey falls into a depression. When a boy with golden eyes shows up at her door, he may be exactly what she needs and everything her mother warned against. Will he ever be able to thaw Aubrey’s heart?

Now that Lora has made it to Takoda and vowed to destroy Lord Xifan and the Hornbroods, she discovers that everyone she cares for has lied to her. Aubrey has disappeared, Lora’s best friend is actually her brother and her other best friend is a giant spider, and the barn is full of suffering. That’s not even the worst of it. If she destroys the barn, it may kill everyone she loves. Is Lora able to do the right thing with such a high cost?

HIDDEN by Megg Jensen - BOOK BLITZ

I'm sure you're aware that I'm a huge fan of author Megg Jensen, right? I'm also privileged to be her critique partner and friend. In fact, at this very moment, I'm helping critique an amazing fantasy novel she's written. Okay. I'll stop bragging. You want to know more about this epic fantasy, don't you? Yeah, I figured you would. Who wouldn't?

Megg was kind enough to provide us with a sneak peek and an excerpt. The first line is a killer. I love it! Check it out. When you're done, enter the Rafflecopter to win some pretty rad stuff!

Book Details:

Hidden by Megg Jensen
(Dragonlands #1)
Genres: Fantasy
Publication date: January

Synopsis:
The mystery enshrouding Hutton’s Bridge is as impenetrable as the fog that descended at its borders eighty years ago. Each year, three villagers enter the mist searching for answers. No one ever returns.
Then a dragon falls from the sky to the town square, dead—the first glimpse of an outside world that has become nothing more than a fairy tale to Hutton’s Bridge. Except to Tressa.
Tressa grew up with Granna’s stories of the days before the fog fell. When Granna dies, leaving Tressa without any family, Tressa ventures into the fog herself, vowing to unravel the foul magic holding Hutton’s Bridge captive.
What she discovers beyond the fog endangers the lives of everyone she loves.

EXCERPT

Death lurked in the air that afternoon. Tressa sat by Grannas bedside, clasping hands with the woman who at ninety-three had outlived her entire generation.
“You are leaving tomorrow, yes?” Grannas liver-spotted hands shook. The rough-hewn walls seemed to close in. Tressa knew Granna didnt have much time left. She wanted to squeeze out every second she could with her.
The smell of tonic and medicine hung in the dark room. When the curtains were drawn, Grannas eyes watered. Adam, the village healer, said sunlight would help Granna, but Tressa knew the truth. Granna would leave her soon, leave the village, taking the only first-hand knowledge of the outside world with her. The tales of the outside world – a place no one in Huttons Bridge had seen since Granna was just a child. Not since the fog had descended on the borders of their village.
“Yes, Granna. You chose me, remember?” Tressa stroked Grannas hair with her free hand. The silver strands were still soft. “Me, Sean, and Connor.”
Granna nodded. “Yes, yes, I remember now.” A gasp preceded each breath, struggling against the inevitable finality of life. “Youre the only girl eligible this year.”
Tressas eyes dropped to the floor strewn with straw, the hem of her long, cotton dress sweeping it every time she moved. She was eligible only because shed never conceived. After three years of coupling, not one baby to show for it. Not even a failed pregnancy. The girls who did achieve pregnancy were never forced to leave. They were safe, protected. Tressa had felt the cold breath of death breathing down her back every time she didnt conceive.
“But, Tressa, it is your destiny to leave the village.”
Tressa held back a sigh. Granna was about to die herself. Why would she want her only great grandchild to follow her in death? No one who ever entered the fog returned to the village. It was as much of a death sentence as Grannas failing health.
Tressas palms began sweating. A tremble skipped up her arms to her chest where her heart pounded out an irregular, nervous beat.
Granna took another deep breath. Without looking at Tressa, she said, “The fog. You must leave. It is your destiny.”
Tressa managed to force out a small laugh. Grannas grave expression didnt fool. “Granna, dont you want me to live a long life, like you have?”
Granna shook her head. “Beyond the fog there is a life for you. I have seen it.”
No one had the gift of sight in her village. Granna claimed once there was magic. It was one element of her stories that made the outside world seem so desirable. Tressa would give anything for a magical potion to save her great grandmother. Instead, they could only rely on Adams knowledge of healing.
“But I was supposed to live to watch you leave. I saw it. I believed it would happen.” She took another breath, shallower this time. “I don’t know if I can hold on until tomorrow.” Grannas eyes flashed with anger. She held out one frail hand. An owl flew through the window, landing on Grannas fingers. The fogs undulating fingers caressed the trees limbs.
“Thats my Nerak.”
The little owl hooted in response.
“You take care of Tressa, Nerak. Help her to see the truth.”
The owls head bobbed, then it flew out the window and sat in the tree.
Tressa leaned down, kissing Granna on the forehead. Granna always said the downy owl had magic. Tressa had never seen it do anything other than the other trained birds in the village. Tressa sat up again. Granna was cold, too cold. Her skin paled into a gray pallor. Her blue eyes lost focus, gazing somewhere over Tressas shoulder.
“I love you, Granna,” she said.
“I love you too, my sweet Tressa.” Her voice rattled. Grannas eyelids fluttered, then closed with a finality only accompanied by death. One last breath expelled, but her lungs didnt take in another whiff of air.
Tressa laid Grannas hand on her stomach. Taking a step back, she took one last look at the woman who had loved her every moment of her life. Tressas mother died in childbirth and her father had left through the fog. Like all of the others, three a year for the last sixty-seven years, none of them returned. Two hundred and one souls lost to the fog.
Tressa was next.

Guest Post - Cheri Lasota

YA Artemis Rising FREE on Kindle June 27-29!

Thrilled to pop by to chat a bit about "Ole Arty." Many of you may not be too familiar with my work as compared to some of the other Indelibles, who have been incredibly prolific with series and multiple books. I have no idea if I'm prolific or not, really. My first novel, a YA historical fantasy, took me a decade to write and it's my only book on offer right now. I'm currently in the middle of ironing out the rough draft of my second novel, another YA.

Artemis Rising, is an intense love story, one based on mythology but even I was surprised at the twists and turns the novel takes on its journey. This story is both a reflection of my past and a hope for my future. It is my magnum opus and for many years was the bane of my existence--ten years is a long time! =) I poured a large part of my soul and time into it, and my greatest hope is that it will touch the lives of others, just as it has touched mine.
For just a few days--June 27-29--Artemis Rising will be free to all on Amazon! To check it out now, just click here.
xoxo,
~Cheri

A bit about the story

On the voyage home to the Azores Islands, Eva accepts the pagan name of Arethusa but learns too late that her life will mirror the Greek nymph’s tragic end. Her mother reveals that her destiny lies with Diogo, the shipowner’s volatile son. But Eva has a vision of another…
When the ship founders in a storm off the coast, Tristan, a local boy, saves her life and steals her heart. Destined to be with Diogo yet aching for Tristan’s forbidden love, Eva must somehow choose between them, or fate will choose for her.

Cheri talks to Dr. Veronica Esagui about Artemis Rising

AUTHOR Q&A

Want to know a little more about me or my writing? Here's a Q&A I did a while back with my publisher, Spirehouse Books

Q: HOW DID YOU CONCEIVE OF ARTEMIS RISING?

A: This is a difficult question. How does anyone come up with a creative idea? I generally don’t understand the mechanism which allows me to breathe life into characters and weave plots and develop universal themes within the context of a historical setting. I am truly only grateful that I’m paying attention long enough to write it all down. Some days it comes easily, some days I think and think and nothing comes to me. But Artemis Rising? Wow, it is a mish-mash of all my longings and fears. It is an amalgam of all my hopes for the future and my memories in the pleasures of the past. It is a laundry list of my most treasured interests and passions. It is also complete and utter fiction. Does that answer your question?
Okay, something a bit more specific. I used to live in the Azores Islands, a profound privilege that went by far too quickly. But the place and its people have stayed with me some fifteen years later, and I knew that no matter what my book would eventually be about, I would set it on Terceira Island, one of the great loves of my life. The setting being carved in stone, I wondered what to write about for the plot. No answer forthcoming, I played on the Internet (what else is a writer to do?). I remember looking up the meaning of my favorite name in all the world, Tristan. That’s when I stumbled upon the Arthurian legend of Tristan and Isolde. Ooh, did I revel in this delicious story! Mad love and longing, knights and ladies, treachery and tragedy—what’s not to love? And then another day, perhaps months later, I was researching mythology. Can’t recall why. I came across the story of Alpheus and Arethusa and noticed strange similarities to the Tristan and Isolde myth. Something just clicked in my mind. I thought, what would happen if I squished those two myths together? What if they became the subtext to my own story. . .? And my mind went racing on with the possibilities.

Q: HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO WRITE ARTEMIS RISING?

A: I think I ought to be embarrassed to answer this question. In some ways I am, because for many years, I was actually terrified of writing. I would start a bit, confuse myself with the complex plot elements, and then give up, slinking away into the dark of night (or rather, into the TV room, where all my favorite already-written stories played out beautifully on screen). My goal was to take a universally well-loved story and turn it on its head, using multiple layers and characters who played not one role but three. This sounded all very well in my head, but it was another thing altogether to coax it out of my over-confident imagination and have it make sense on the page. It was like one of those giant puzzles of some scenic place with tiny, confusing pieces that rather frustrate you before you bother to finish it. I knew the pieces would fit, I just knew it. But how? And what would it all mean once I got the puzzle together? I began the research for Artemis Rising in earnest when I was 22 years old. I am now 31, and am only just now feeling confident in the puzzle. It was, I confess, the most difficult endeavor I’ve ever undertaken. But I wouldn’t give it up for the world.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR WRITING REGIMEN?

A: I suppose some writers have a daily regimen. Er, does it actually work like that? Ha! Okay, I confess: I’m a cheater. I generally kick-start another round of editing or writing every November for National Novel Writing Month. Yes, I know. I’m supposed to be starting a brand new novel for NaNoWriMo, but I can’t help it. I find that sitting down with my friends in cozy coffeeshops during the bitter cold days of November to be one of the most inspiring literary endeavorings (yes, I just made up that word) I can think of doing. And if I really need to get a WIP finished, then why not?
So I’m one of those writers who is an occasional obsessive. If I’m on a deadline–self-imposed or otherwise–I work like mad until it is done, and every other thing in my life takes a backseat. Is this healthy? I have no idea. But it certainly works for me. But there are two things I cannot live without as I write: coffeeshops and film scores. Nigh impossible to concentrate in my apartment with my laundry, Xbox (oh, yes, I’m a HUGE fan of gaming–bet you didn’t guess that, huh?), and vast movie collection to distract me.
And film scores . . . *sigh* I NEVER write better prose than when I’m swept along to the soundtracks of Mansfield ParkLord of the Rings, and Atonement. Absolute silence makes me slightly insane, so I always have to have some noise in the background. But I can’t listen to Top 40 radio, because then I’ll just sing along. You see the dilemma . . . But being obsessed with movies since I was in the womb and subsequently majoring in film at university, I have a special little space in my heart for film–and most especially for scores and soundtracks. And since now, I’ve gotten into scoring piano music for local indie films, including my book trailer, I’m just that much more interested in the topic. I would go so far as to say I can’t write without a score in my ear.

Q: WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER?

A: A simple question and a simple answer: Tristan. Must I elaborate? He is my ideal, you see. Flawed, yes, but his intentions are honest. He has a good soul, and I treasure him for that. And Eva needs kindness, given what she’s been through. He is her perfect match.

Q: HOW DID YOU APPROACH YOUR RESEARCH?

A: With trepidation . . .? There is so little research available about the Azores Islands in the 1890s. Education had been abolished by the freemasons for decades, so much of what daily life was like has been lost to oral histories only. I did my utmost to create a world as authentic as possible while remaining true to my vision of the story. A great resource I must mention: James H. Guill’s A History of the Azores Islands.
Want to connect with me? You can find me on Google+Facebook, and Twitter. Or you can pop by my website to explore the novel even more or contact me directly. Want me to guest post on your blog? Shoot me a message. I'd be glad to!

Introducing the next Lords of Shifters Novel - Dark Horse

Writing. It's one of the most difficult jobs I've ever had. It doesn't come easy to me like it does so many other writers. You know, the awesome authors who can put out several books a year. Difficulty is one reason I love it so much. It's a challenge. Sometimes a downright battle, but it's so worth it. The satisfaction of creating a story that touches a heart or makes someone think or entertains for a short while makes all that hard work seem like no big deal.

That said, I'd like to introduce you to my new work in progress. I'm giving you the title, the lead characters, the blurb, and the cover (created by my favorite cover artist, Robin Ludwig Design). You'll have to wait until late summer / early fall for the book.

Say hello to Amethea and Cerus.

Dark Horse - A Lords of Shifters Novel
by Angela Carlie

Amethea thought she was the last of her kind, a creature from mythical stories, from light, peace, and magic. But, Amethea isn't a myth, and she doesn't hold any peace in her heart. She watched as her family was murdered for the magic of their horns. She'd give anything to avenge their deaths. She just hasn't figured out how yet.

When she meets another, Cerus, everything changes.

Together, they harness more power than Amethea ever dreamed. But is it enough to take down the Lords of Shifters?

FALL, 2012

And now, Amethea has a few words before I let you go...

I am Amethea--the last of the unicorns. The only living daughter of Grane and Epona. My family was slaughtered before my eyes for their magic. Xifan saved me and raised me in the dark underworld of Hornbrood where I learned to use some of my magic in ways to inflict harm on those who must suffer for their sins. I made a vow to avenge my family, and I will keep my promise. No matter the cost. Even if it kills me.

Someday Famous YA Author -- Tymothy Longoria

When I first began my publishing adventure, I met several awesome authors online. Although time hasn't allowed me to become great friends with many of them, I'm happy that I've at least had the opportunity to keep in touch with some and check up on others occasionally. Tymothy Longoria is one of those authors I've been able to check up on.  Every time I do, I'm inspired to dive back into my writing to create something bigger and better than I originally planned.

He's inspiring, hard working, motivational, and one of the friendliest authors I've met online.

Today, I'm super stoked to be able to introduce you to him, Q and A style.

Q: I've read a lot about what your novel, The Stories: Book One, is (epic, fantasy, legendary...), which sounds totally awesome and I can't wait to someday read, but I'm wondering if you could tell us what it is about and how you came up with the idea to write this epic novel.

A: Word. I wrote maybe two chapters and I was so excited about the whole concept/idea I couldn’t keep it to myself. So I asked a writer who I had a really good rapport with if she would be willing to read. She did and gave me some notes. The first thing she wrote was you have the makings of an epic fantasy here. So that’s where epic comes from of course. Legends. The Stories are…legends of lore. Of written history. Simplified, The “Stories” is named after the fairy tales and mythical characters that have become immortal in literature. My good friend and author of For Nothing Nicholas Denmon said this: “I think yours is a C.S.Lewis / Brother's Grimm love child with hints of Steven Erickson's The Malazan Book of the Fallen. What I mean by that is of course you take from the Grimm stories and you have some religious undertones throughout, after the CS Lewis fashion. But where it is unique is that it is not a retelling of the Tolkien type of epic fantasy (orcs, dark lord, elves, etc), but is rather a unique epic fantasy in that I do not believe multiple Grimm stories and characters have ever been woven together into a tapestry of epic proportions, generating a story where all pieces fit together in the grand scheme of the greater quest-”

I think I can answer what it’s about by borrowing my own synopsis from the agency website.

The Stories centers around L’orrah Ineyez a.k.a the little red riding hood. L'orrah is 14. For the past four years she has been living alone in a veritable hole in the earth, coming out only at night to train with a blade left behind by her grandmother Sarah. She uses it against the beasts that have seized control of the land and are killing anyone unlike them. She fights. For what? Wolves (not werewolves, mind you) are out to get her. The Stories begins as the master of the Wolves hunts down and kills the leaders who had him sentenced to death years before and leaves L'orrah to die as well. L'orrah survives; her blade and red cloak her only companions. She decides to fight back and trains herself in the ways of battle, becoming cold and taciturn in the process.

But even with her new abilities and strength, L'orrah cannot fight the Wolves alone; with the help of the last descendant of the Boars Three, a mysterious Piper, and his companions, L'orrah sets out to right the wrongs committed by the Wolves and their master. But her journey for revenge and justice takes a dark turn. She realizes that there are things about herself that have been kept hidden-and that this red riding hood was born to give Wolves nightmares. Through her pain and anguish she will see to it that they never awaken from them. First however, she must embrace the true darkness within. L'orrah and her friends must unite against the evil that looms and grows more powerful than anything they’ve ever come across.

The idea came to me in a vision. Seriously. An image came to me. A girl in a red hood was running in a dark forest. Running from what? I didn’t see, but I heard the stampeding horde that chased her. From that…I figured why not take that red hood and make it something. It quickly evolved and The Stories was born.

Q: You recently signed with an agent, Bree Ogden. Congratulations! I've read that you have considered self-publishing in the past. What changed your mind to seek out an agent to publish traditionally?

A: Thank you so much. I am blessed to have her as my agent. She is out of the box cool. In the industry I think it’s safe to say that people want whats tested and proven. Not me. I wanted a unique voice for my unique story.

This answer will be much shorter. I support all writers. Self-pubbed. Indie. Traditional. They all deserve support and respect. For me, it was only a consideration to self-pub because I didn’t know what I had. The idea, the potential of the series and so forth. It comes down to my faith. I had faith that someone, somewhere to snatch it up. I mean, and I have read before writers saying to try traditional first anyway. That’s when I saw a truck pass by right in front of me with the name Tim Lowder on the side. I took that as a clear sign from God to go louder than the pod/self-publishing house I had been communicating with a few times before. To go louder for me-was to attempt traditional.

Q: When you aren't writing, how do you enjoy spending your time?

A: I spend as much time as I can with my family-my wife and two kids. They are everything to me, of course and they support me 100%. So, I guess even when I’m writing and “away” from them, they are right there with me. Music runs through my veins alongside the Spanish and Greek blood and I really, really enjoy plugging in the headphones and getting lost in some writing. Well, see? When I’m not writing, I’m writing. Deviantart and art as a whole. I love it. I enjoy sitting back and I have spent hours just perusing amazing art. God. God is everything. I spend time with Him. For me, it is what motivates me the most. He leads me. Of this I have no doubt.

Q: On your blog, you suggest MTV have a category for Best Book, Best New Book, Best Author, and Best New Author. I totally think this is a rad idea. Out of the books you've read thus far in 2011, what books and what authors would you nominate in the above suggested categories?

A: Now this is a hard question to answer. But I’m the guy suggesting this, right? Basically, so many of the movies that are nominated and win these awards are BASED off or developed from b o o k s. Ya know?

I’m not one for best anything. Everyone deserves to receive praise. Everyone that tries, ya know. The reason I thought this up was because I felt through all of the hoopla and the beautiful actors potraying the characters dreamed up by authors-there is an author. A creator. But I do have a few opinions too. ;}

I’ll say Lord of the Rings for best book. It’s a legend. Understatement of the year. First, because I just finished it a few weeks ago. I started earlier this year. So it’s fresh on my mind still. Secondly, because its inspiration transcends genre, I think. So that’s why I nominate it.

Best New Book: Now I’m going to cheat here and nominate a book on my to-be-read list. Carrier Of The Mark by Leigh Fallon. Because Fallon is one of the nicest authors I know, that’s why.

Best Author: I’ve started reading Graceling by Kristin Cashore at the urging of SmashAttackAsh a.k.a. Smash. Also I’ll be reading Steven Erickson, author of the The Malazan Book of the Fallen soon as well.

Much to read. Much to share.

Best New Author: Leigh Fallon :}

Q: And for the final question, I'm going to let you choose. Ask yourself a question that you'd love to answer that hasn't been asked in other interviews, then answer it.

Ah, indeed.

Plotter or panster?

My wife and I were talking the other day. We came to the conclusion that I am most definitely a by-the-seat-of-my-pants writer. In fact, some short stories I’ve written that have appeared online in the children’s macabre literature and art magazine Underneath the Juniper Tree- awesome, have been written with no previous outlining or plotting whatsoever. It’s me. I mean yes, I’ve plotted before but I find that those notes are quickly trumped by my hands wanting to type what they want.

Dreaming of Wordstock

The Wordstock Festival here in Portland has been around for about five years. Every year of its existence, I've wandered the aisles of beautiful books and writing services being promoted and celebrated by local authors, publishers, editors, and the like. Then I'd sit in on a reading or two and get uber-excited to meet the authors.

While listening to the readers, I'd also fantasize that someday I'd be up there reading my pages. Lets put a little emphasis on the word FANTASY here because if I were to ever get up on a stage to read my pages, mouth farts, drool, and hiccups would probably be the only thing exiting my lips. Stage fright anyone? In Autumn's words from my novel, Dream Smashers, "One can still have hope." And in my words, "One can still dream."

This is my first year to have a published novel. I thought for sure they would definitely let me read at the festival this year, because, well, I have a published novel, darn it. Plus, I'm from the same area the festival is held, total shoe-in. Plus, plus, I whispered nice things to the book, like, "Please impress the peeps responsible for inviting authors to the festival," and "Don't fail me now," before sliding it into the bubbly envelope and addressing it to the Wordstock powers.

I waited patiently everyday for the mail-person to deliver my invitation to the ball. Did I ever receive one? Sadly, uh, it probably got lost somewhere and should arrive any day now.

Disappointed by the loss of my invitation, I scrolled through the very impressive list of YA and Middle Grade authors whose invitation didn't fall through the door panel of the mail truck. OMG! No wonder mine got lost.

Take a look for yourself: The List of YA and Middle Grade Authors attending Wordstock 2011

How is a local author supposed to compete with that? Sigh. Well, there's always next year, right?

Oh, and did you see on that list one of my favorite authors? Maggie Stiefvater! How cool is that? Very.

Chin up, peeps, we'll get there someday. Peace out for now.
