Thrilled to pop by to chat a bit about "Ole Arty." Many of you may not
be too familiar with my work as compared to some of the other
Indelibles, who have been incredibly prolific with series and multiple
books. I have no idea if I'm prolific or not, really. My first novel, a
YA historical fantasy, took me a decade to write and it's my only book
on offer right now. I'm currently in the middle of ironing out the rough
draft of my second novel, another YA.
Artemis Rising,
is an intense love story, one based on mythology but even I was
surprised at the twists and turns the novel takes on its journey. This
story is both a reflection of my past and a hope for my future. It is my
magnum opus and for many years was the bane of my existence--ten years
is a long time! =) I poured a large part of my soul and time into it,
and my greatest hope is that it will touch the lives of others, just as
it has touched mine.
For just a few days--June 27-29--Artemis Rising will be free to all on Amazon! To check it out now, just click here.
xoxo,
~Cheri
A bit about the story
On
the voyage home to the Azores Islands, Eva accepts the pagan name of
Arethusa but learns too late that her life will mirror the Greek nymph’s
tragic end. Her mother reveals that her destiny lies with Diogo, the
shipowner’s volatile son. But Eva has a vision of another…
When
the ship founders in a storm off the coast, Tristan, a local boy, saves
her life and steals her heart. Destined to be with Diogo yet aching for
Tristan’s forbidden love, Eva must somehow choose between them, or
fate will choose for her.
Cheri talks to Dr. Veronica Esagui about Artemis Rising
AUTHOR Q&A
Want to know a little more about me or my writing? Here's a Q&A I did a while back with my publisher, Spirehouse Books.
Q: HOW DID YOU CONCEIVE OF ARTEMIS RISING?
A: This is a difficult question. How
does anyone come up with a creative idea? I generally don’t understand
the mechanism which allows me to breathe life into characters and weave
plots and develop universal themes within the context of a historical
setting. I am truly only grateful that I’m paying attention long enough
to write it all down. Some days it comes easily, some days I think and
think and nothing comes to me. But Artemis Rising?
Wow, it is a mish-mash of all my longings and fears. It is an amalgam
of all my hopes for the future and my memories in the pleasures of the
past. It is a laundry list of my most treasured interests and passions.
It is also complete and utter fiction. Does that answer your question?
Okay,
something a bit more specific. I used to live in the Azores Islands, a
profound privilege that went by far too quickly. But the place and its
people have stayed with me some fifteen years later, and I knew that no
matter what my book would eventually be about, I would set it on
Terceira Island, one of the great loves of my life. The setting being
carved in stone, I wondered what to write about for the plot. No answer
forthcoming, I played on the Internet (what else is a writer to do?). I
remember looking up the meaning of my favorite name in all the world,
Tristan. That’s when I stumbled upon the Arthurian legend of Tristan and
Isolde. Ooh, did I revel in this delicious story! Mad love and longing,
knights and ladies, treachery and tragedy—what’s not to love? And then
another day, perhaps months later, I was researching mythology. Can’t
recall why. I came across the story of Alpheus and Arethusa and noticed
strange similarities to the Tristan and Isolde myth. Something just
clicked in my mind. I thought, what would happen if I squished those two
myths together? What if they became the subtext to my own story. . .?
And my mind went racing on with the possibilities.
Q: HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO WRITE ARTEMIS RISING?
A: I think I ought to be embarrassed
to answer this question. In some ways I am, because for many years, I
was actually terrified of writing. I would start a bit, confuse myself
with the complex plot elements, and then give up, slinking away into the
dark of night (or rather, into the TV room, where all my favorite
already-written stories played out beautifully on screen). My goal was
to take a universally well-loved story and turn it on its head, using
multiple layers and characters who played not one role but three. This
sounded all very well in my head, but it was another thing altogether to
coax it out of my over-confident imagination and have it make sense on
the page. It was like one of those giant puzzles of some scenic place
with tiny, confusing pieces that rather frustrate you before you bother
to finish it. I knew the pieces would fit, I just knew it. But how? And
what would it all mean once I got the puzzle together? I began the
research for Artemis Rising in
earnest when I was 22 years old. I am now 31, and am only just now
feeling confident in the puzzle. It was, I confess, the most difficult
endeavor I’ve ever undertaken. But I wouldn’t give it up for the world.
Q: WHAT’S YOUR WRITING REGIMEN?
A:
I suppose some writers have a daily regimen. Er, does it actually work
like that? Ha! Okay, I confess: I’m a cheater. I generally kick-start
another round of editing or writing every November for National Novel
Writing Month. Yes, I know. I’m supposed to be starting a brand new
novel for NaNoWriMo, but I can’t help it. I find that sitting down with
my friends in cozy coffeeshops during the bitter cold days of November
to be one of the most inspiring literary endeavorings (yes, I just made
up that word) I can think of doing. And if I really need to get a WIP
finished, then why not?
So
I’m one of those writers who is an occasional obsessive. If I’m on a
deadline–self-imposed or otherwise–I work like mad until it is done, and
every other thing in my life takes a backseat. Is this healthy? I have
no idea. But it certainly works for me. But there are two things I
cannot live without as I write: coffeeshops and film scores. Nigh
impossible to concentrate in my apartment with my laundry, Xbox (oh,
yes, I’m a HUGE fan of gaming–bet you didn’t guess that, huh?), and vast
movie collection to distract me.
And film scores . . . *sigh* I NEVER write better prose than when I’m swept along to the soundtracks of Mansfield Park, Lord of the Rings, and Atonement.
Absolute silence makes me slightly insane, so I always have to have
some noise in the background. But I can’t listen to Top 40 radio,
because then I’ll just sing along. You see the dilemma . . . But being
obsessed with movies since I was in the womb and subsequently majoring
in film at university, I have a special little space in my heart for
film–and most especially for scores and soundtracks. And since now, I’ve
gotten into scoring piano music for local indie films, including my
book trailer, I’m just that much more interested in the topic. I would
go so far as to say I can’t write without a score in my ear.
Q: WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER?
A: A simple question and a simple
answer: Tristan. Must I elaborate? He is my ideal, you see. Flawed, yes,
but his intentions are honest. He has a good soul, and I treasure him
for that. And Eva needs kindness, given what she’s been through. He is
her perfect match.
Q: HOW DID YOU APPROACH YOUR RESEARCH?
A: With trepidation . . .? There is
so little research available about the Azores Islands in the 1890s.
Education had been abolished by the freemasons for decades, so much of
what daily life was like has been lost to oral histories only. I did my
utmost to create a world as authentic as possible while remaining true
to my vision of the story. A great resource I must mention: James H.
Guill’s A History of the Azores Islands.

The last thing on 16-year-old Jess
DeLand’s wish list is a boyfriend. She’d have to be crazy to think any
guy would look twice at her. Besides, there are more important things
to hope for, like a job working on cars and an end to her mom’s
drinking. Foster care is a constant threat, and Jess is willing to
sacrifice anything to stay out of the system. When luck hands her the
chance to work on a race car, she finds herself rushing full throttle
into a world of opportunities—including a boy who doesn’t mind the
grease under her fingernails. The question is, can a girl who keeps
herself locked up tighter than Richard Petty’s racing secrets open up
enough to risk friendship and her first romance?

“The first romance is captured beautifully—just the right combination
of natural and awkward, of eager and scared.”

PRAISE FOR
Open Minds (Book One of the Mindjack Trilogy)
“Being a fan of dystopian and sci-fi in young adult books this was exactly the type of book I was hoping to fall in love with and absolutely did ...YA readers who love authors like Ally Condie, Veronica Roth, Lauren Oliver and others would be missing out if they failed to pick upOpen Mindsby Susan Kaye Quinn. Join Kira on her journey to save her fellow mindjackers and potentially change the landscape of her world forever.”
— Danielle Smith, book blogger at There’s a Book
“Susan plunges readers into a compelling and frightening world where nearly everyone can read minds when they come of age. The very idea makes me shudder. This is easily one of the best books I've read not only this year, but in recent years.”
— Heather McCorkle, author of The Secret of Spruce Knoll
"Susan Kaye Quinn's Open Minds is an edge-of-the-seat YA sci-fi, where 16 year-old Kira dodges psychological bullets from all sides." — Catherine Stine, author of Fireseed One
Susan Kaye Quinn grew up in California, where she wrote snippets of stories and passed them to her friends during class. She pursued a bunch of engineering degrees and worked a lot of geeky jobs, including turns at GE Aircraft Engines, NASA, and NCAR. Now that she writes novels, her business card says "Author and Rocket Scientist" and she doesn't have to sneak her notes anymore. All that engineering comes in handy when dreaming up paranormal powers in future worlds or mixing science with fantasy to conjure slightly plausible inventions. Susan writes from the Chicago suburbs with her three boys, two cats, and one husband. Which, it turns out, is exactly as much as she can handle.
Heather: I'm so excited to share the cover of my young adult historical fantasy novel, To Ride A Púca, with you. I've been waiting for so long to reveal the news and the cover that it's been driving me crazy! This novel is special to me, as many of you know, because it felt like my heart and soul has gone into it. It isn't a part of the channeler series, though it is a tie-in novel as it's about one of Eren's ancestors. This is a stand alone of a very different flavor and I hope you love it as much as I do.
Here is a bit about it:
Invaders are coming to take what isn't theirs, again.
Neala wants to stand and fight for her homeland, but as one of the last druids, she may be standing alone.
Persecuted, hunted down, forced to live in obscurity, the druids have all but given up. Can the determination of a girl who has barely come into her power bring them together? Or, just when she finally finds her place among her kind, will they end up losing a homeland their very magic is tied to?
This novel is intended for mature teens and adults as it contains some difficult subject matter.
I had to throw that warning in because I had one person who was disturbed by some of the subject matter in The Secret Of Spruce Knoll. To Ride A Púca is a much darker novel than Spruce Knoll and will certainly not be appropriate for some readers. Slavery, oppression, and violent situations are within this novel. It certainly falls under the dark YA catagory. But it is also about hope, love, and belonging. It releases this May! To add this novel to your Goodreads lists click here. To pre-order a signed hardback (to ship at the end of May), click here.
To celebrate the release of Channeler's Choice I'm doing a blog tour that launches today and goes through March 17th along with a giveaway. Here
are the prizes:
With her parents’ murderer’s dead, Eren can finally concentrate on fitting in at Spruce Knoll High, not to mention figuring out what it means to be a channeler. If only it were that easy. It turns out she isn’t normal even among channelers - she may be a legendary warrior meant to protect the earth in a last great battle.
But Mayan prophecies are the least of her worries as she involuntarily starts to gather her own Society, another girl moves in on Aiden, her powers rage out of control, and worst of all, someone is stalking her. To top it all off, Eren discovers she doesn’t have to be a channeler after all - she has a choice.
As an old threat closes in and she risks ending up like her parents, she is forced to decide. Be a normal teenager and leave the legendary warrior stuff to someone else, or embrace a dark destiny?
Finally! The second Lords of Shifters novel--Spider Wars--is now on Amazon and Smashwords. Eventually, peeps can get it wherever ebooks are sold.

The way things are looking, Spider Wars will be out in a few weeks. I'm so excited! I hope you are, too.
When he woke that evening, he didn’t
expect to look his fear in the eyes. All four or six of them, depending on which
one stood before him at the time. Eight gangly long legs, shifting left and
right, protruded from two fuzzy globes connected in the center.
Spiders.
They covered the floor, a moving carpet
of legs and eyes and dagger hairs.
A virus of terror rushed through his
limbs, solidifying them in place. His body a potential carcass to be devoured
by tiny fangs.
Every surface of the room, the walls,
the ceiling, and the only exit, moved in waves of spider parts. Big and small,
brown spiders, black spiders, green and yellow, traveled up his legs and over
his muscular body.
In his century of life, he’d never known
terror like this. If these creatures ate his body, he’d walk the earth as a
soul forever. He wasn’t ready for that yet.
Hair-like legs scurried over his unshaven
cheek. He gathered every ounce of strength he had and broke his limbs free of
their paralyzed state. He jerked and gyrated to shake the creepers off, but
they stuck to him like maggots to rotting meat. They burrowed under his skin,
sucking his body dry of life fluids. Dehydrated and close to mummified, he
dropped to all fours and crawled through the masses, crunching tiny lives into
smashed bits under his hands and knees as he moved for the exit.
The door swung open. A young woman with
fiery hair and a tattered black corset dress cast a shadow into
the small room. The carpet of crawlers scurried away toward the back wall.
Spiders shot out of his mouth and ears as if he was possessed—they backed out from
under his skin, fleeing from the woman.
She drifted into the head of the room, a
goddess, a monster.
Two others joined her, their faces
unrecognizable in the dark, but their hair glowed from the moonlight behind
them. A blond and a dark brunette.
The dark haired woman nudged her long
limbs past the redhead. “Children,” she hissed. “The time is near to prove to
the humans your place in this world is not under their feet, but to put them where
they belong, wrapped in a web and on dinner plates.”
The surface of the walls and ceiling
bubbled with movement, down to the floor where he lay helpless, void
of hope. His internal tissues had already begun the regeneration process as he
rested on the dirt floor, realizing the horror of the woman’s words. His heart
burned from new tissue growth out of half eaten muscle, but he held onto the
groans of pain. His breath rattled in his chest, his body’s attempt to clear
the venom the spiders left behind.
“That’s right, my children. Feed on this
wretched immortal. Gain your strength. You’ll need it for the battles to come.”
The floor snapped alive.
This time, he didn’t have time to scream. Even if he wanted to.
Fellow Indelible author, Elle Strauss, has a new release for kids grades 8-12. I haven't read it yet, but I'm looking forward to it! Why? I can give you a few reasons right off the bat.
1. The description is awesome (and a little creepy) -- check it out below. 2. The cover is sweet. 3. The story takes place in the Pacific Northwest. All my stories are set in the Pacific Northwest, so it's interesting to discover how other authors bring this beautiful place to life--especially my home state of Washington. 4. It's illustrated!!! Duh. How neat is that? Very.

Owen True is eleven and eleven twelfths and has been "exiled" to the
small crazy town of Hayward, WA, aka, Haywire, while his mother is on
her honeymoon. All he has to whittle away the time is the company of
Gramps, his black lab Daisy, and his Haywire friends, Mason and Mikala
Sweet. They don't look so hot this year, in fact, the whole town has
gone to pot since the mill shut down.
Owen has his first encounter with a real life homeless man who ends up
needing Owen's help in more ways than one. But how does a rich city kid
help the small town's suffering citizens?
And what is Owen to make of the fog train and its scary, otherworldy
occupants that appears out of thin air on the old tracks behind Gramps'
house? Do they have the answer Owen is looking for?
Praise for IT'S A LITTLE HAYWIRE
"Strauss' characters are absolutely precious, especially Mikala. Your
heart just breaks for her and her family. And Owen was a funny little
toot, with a heart of gold. Just because you are young doesn't mean you
can't help a community in need!Such a wonderful little read, that
brought a tear to my eye at the end." - Mandy at twimom101 book blog-
book reviewer
"IT'S A LITTLE HAYWIRE reminds me of Because of Winn Dixie by Kate
DiCamillo. It's that good....I loved the magic in this story. I mean the
magic of story, a great story, the kind that pulls you in and makes
you care about the characters. Elle Strauss does a wonderful job of
pulling everything together at the end in a moving way." - Laura
Pauling - book blogger, book reviewer
We have the pleasure of meeting a super-awesome author, who also happens to be an Indelible. Today, I introduce to you Cory Putman Oakes, Q and A style.
About Cory
Cory Putman Oakes was born in Basel, Switzerland, but grew up in
Novato, California and attended Marin Catholic High School. She then
spent three fantastic years at the University of California at Los
Angeles before graduating in 2001 with a B.A. in Psychology. In 2004,
Cory graduated from Cornell Law School with a Juris Doctorate Degree and
her husband, Mark (the first was the intended consequence of attending
the school, the second was a bonus). Since then, she has been an
associate at a big law firm, taught business law to undergraduates at
Texas State University and written several books for young people.
Cory now lives in Austin, Texas with Mark and their beautiful
daughter, Sophia. In addition to writing, Cory enjoys reading, cooking,
running, and hanging out with her family and pets.
THE VEIL is Cory’s first published work.
Q AND A
1. The description for your debut novel, The
Veil, sounds so mysterious and exciting. Please tell us a little about it and
what inspired you to write it.
Thanks! The Veil is actually set in my
hometown of Novato, California (which is near San Francisco). A lot of the
locations in the book were inspired by places I used to hang out when I was in
high school – like Jest Jewels (the awesome jewelry store), the Headlands, and Ghirardelli
Square. But most of the other things in the book – like the Annorasi, the
special powers, and the really hot guy – those were all things I made up. There
was definitely nobody like Luc in my high school – but I always wished there
was!
2. OMG! You're an attorney! Wow. Do you
still practice? If yes, how do you find the time to do it all? If no, what made
you decide to leave that field?
Leaving the law was a very difficult
decision! But I knew I wanted to write and I didn’t have time to do that when I
was practicing full time at a law firm. I taught business law at Texas State
University for a while, and I was better able to balance that schedule with
writing. But now-a-days, writing and taking care of my daughter (who is almost
2) take up pretty much all of my time.
3. Why YA?
The books that I really fell in love with –
the ones that made me want to be a writer myself – were all YA books. I read a
lot of Tamora Pierce and Robin McKinley when I was young and basically I wanted
to be them when I grew up (or their main characters – I would have been happy
growing up to be Alanna or Harry too). I think that’s still where my mind goes
when I sit down to write – back to the books that inspired me. I would love to
make someone feel that way about my books one day!
4. I read on your bio that you were born in
Switzerland. How cool is that? Have you gone back to visit? If yes, what's one
thing you find shockingly different about life in Switzerland vs. America?
My parents are American but they lived in
Switzerland for a short time, to have an adventure before they settled down. We
moved back to the US when I was just a couple of months old. I’ve been back to
visit a few times – it’s so beautiful there!
The only cultural difference I really know
of (aside from the fact that they are really, really good at making chocolate)
is that the Swiss are, in general, more reserved than Americans. Specifically,
they do not squeal over babies in public, the way Americans do. After I was
born, my parents thought there was something hideously wrong with me until they
landed back in the US and people finally started telling them how cute I was.
(Or maybe I was hideous for those
first couple of months? I guess we’ll never know . . .)
5. List the top five of your top ten
favorite things. ;) And/or what is one question that you want someone to ask in
an interview, but they haven't. Then, answer it.
1. My family (my hubby, my daughter, my dog
and two cats)
2.That moment while reading (or writing)
when you say to yourself, “OMG this is going to be good.”
3. Chocolate
4. Feeling that I am organized, on top of
things, and ahead of the game (this almost never happens!)
5. A good meal with old friends and a great
bottle of wine.
Thank you, Cory, for spending some time with us today!
THE VEIL
Seventeen-year-old Addison Russell is in for a shock when she

woman who raised her, even the most beautiful boy in town all turn out
to be more than what they seem. And when this strange new world forces
Addy to answer for a crime that was committed long ago, by parents she
has never known, she has no choice but to trust Luc, the mysterious
Annorasi who has been sent to protect her.
